Arbeitslos zieht José fort, statt wie geplant Rita zu heiraten ... Als Julio Bracho sein Drehbuch über die korrupten Zustände im mexikanischen Hinterland nirgends finanziert bekam, nahm sich Rumbera-Ikone Ninón Sevilla des Projekts an, arbeitete den Stoff mit ihm um, brachte Kamerasuperstar Gabriel Figueroa an Bord – tat kurz gesagt alles, damit der Film so stil- wie qualitätsvoll gemacht werden konnte. Das Resultat: eine formvollendete, visuell berauschende, perfekt austarierte Mischung von Melodram und Analyse politischer Missverhältnisse.
